A one-page family money agreement.

What I cover. How much. Until when. Sit down with the person you send money to, fill in the six lines together, and print it. Most of the fights about family money are fights about what was never said out loud. This says it.

Our money agreement

Between (sending) and (receiving). Written on .

  1. What I cover

Name the bills or needs, not “help”. Rent. The phone. Groceries. Medicine. Say which ones, and whether the money goes to you or straight to the biller.

  2. How much, each month

One number. Write it in words too, the way a check does, so there is nothing to argue about later.

  3. What day it arrives

Pick the day the money leaves my account. If that lands before your rent is due, say so here and we move it.

  4. The cap

The most that can go out in any one month, including anything extra. When a one-off ask would go over it, the answer is already written: not this month.

  5. Until when

An end date, or the thing that has to happen first (a job, a move, a benefit coming through). We sit down again two weeks before it and decide what comes next. Nothing just continues.

  6. One-off asks

How you ask, how long I take to answer, and who else sees it. Writing this down is what keeps “not this time” from turning into a fight.

  7. Who can see this page

My partner, your partner, a sibling. Say who. Money that others can see stays calmer than money that runs on text messages.

IF YOU WANT IT ENFORCED, NOT REMEMBERED

Allende holds the line for you.

Put the same six lines into Allende and it does the holding: the monthly goes out on the day you chose, a one-off ask comes to you as a question with the cap beside it, and both of you see the same agreement. $35 a person a month, paid six months at a time.
